BOOK REPORT GUIDELINES 2007-08 HOPKINS

  Book Report Guidelines 07-08

In a day and age when television and computers run our lives, it is important that we realize the power of the written word. Therefore, outside reading is a requirement in this class.

GUIDELINES

You may read only one author, one time each semester. This is the same for books that have been made into movies; only one per each semester. If you want to read more of the same author, or another movie book, you may read it for ¼ credit of the full pages.

This is to encourage you to read a variety of genres and authors.

NO  “pick the ending”, Chicken Soup for the Soul, or movies/television shows that have been made into books (you will know these when the book has “based on the screenplay/teleplay”). Religious books such as The Bible, The Book of Mormon, or The Koran are not allowed due to obvious conflicts. However you may read religious themed books such as the Left Behind series.

•You are the judge of the book you read, but I expect you read a novel suitable to your age group. I also expect you to report on the book you read during your in-class reading time. Even if you do not like the book and read ten pages, give a report. It will count toward your final pages. In short, have the book you are going to report on in class for outside reading.

•The number of pages you read will determine your grade. The pages do not have to be from the same book. Whatever pages you read, REPORT ON! If you exceed the number of pages required for an “A”, each fifty pages over 400 will count as five extra credit points. These points will “max-out” at fifty points. This is one of the few extra credit opportunities you will have throughout the year, so take advantage of it.

•I will interview you to determine how well you have read the book. Be prepared to answer questions about specific passages, and minor characters. I will ask you a series of seven questions, if you answer four of them right, you will receive credit for the pages.

If you cannot answer four of the seven questions, you will not receive credit.

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR BOOK TO BE INTERVIEWED.

I will give ONE report a class on regular class days. This is on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will have days that all we will do is book reports. These days are right before quarter grades are due. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THIS DAY TO READ YOUR BOOK! START READING RIGHT NOW! I will also give book reports before and after school.
